Project manager at GIZ until 2023, supporting international agricultural research, the promotion of the values chain, support to value chain actors in sub-saharan Africa (rice, cashew, rubber, oil palm), team member of CmiA/COMPACI support project on cotton. Dr. Stefan Kachelriess-Matthess worked as freelance consultant mostly in the West African region. He speaks fluently French and English. He is an agronomist by training, specialised in agricultural production in the tropics and agricultural and rural development. His professional background is on agricultural research and extension, communication, adult training and the linkage between research and extension using participatory methods and process oriented capacity development. He is an experienced moderator, trainer and facilitator. In value chain development, Stefan Kachelriess-Matthess specialised on the moderation of stakeholder workshops and the design of projects promoting value chains and the support of the different actors involved in their role as facilitator and stakeholder. He has been involved in the promotion of value chains based on sesame, cashew, cotton, cassava, rice, rubber, palm oil and non-timber forest products. His regional experience covers sub Saharan Africa, specially Benin, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Morocco, Cameroon and Ghana and he has professional experience in Anglophone and Francophone Africa since 1990. Since 2025 he is co-chairman of the Pro Small Holder Farmers in Africa (SFA) association based in Germany. SFA promotes social and ecological sustainability of smallholder farming in Africa with a special focus on cotton based farming systems.
